What could be more fun than a day dedicated to the celebration of all things fragrant? National Fragrance Day, 21st March, was first registered on the National Day Calendar a few years ago but the response was initially very low key. In recent years however, with fragrance appreciation at an all time high, things have started to change and National Fragrance Day has become the focus for olfactory celebration all over the country.
In fact two of the UK’s most influential perfume organisations, The Fragrance Foundation and The Perfume Society have really notched things up a level in 2016 with exciting initiatives that anyone can take part in.
Earlier this year The Fragrance Foundation launched #ScentMemories, a cross platform social media campaign which invites people to share their favourite fragrant memory. There are happy memories, sad memories, funny anecdotes and odes to fragrances of old on the blog. It is open to everyone so if you have a story you’d like to share, Facebook, Tweet or Instagram using #ScentMemories to join in the conversation.
The Perfume Society’s #smellfie campaign is a delightfully lighthearted celebration of our favourite scents. So what is a #smellfie? Well championing the ever-growing social media trend of ‘selfies’, a #smellfie is simply a picture of yourself with the bottle of perfume you adore. Once you have taken your picture simply share on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #smellfie and tagging The Perfume Society.
Stores up and down the country are also joining in the fun with special activities dedicated to the exploration of the scented universe. This is an opportunity to try things you haven’t tried before, step out of your comfort zone and discover something new and exciting. There’s a world of amazing fragrances out there just waiting to be discovered……..
And while those of us in the industry don’t really need an excuse to get excited about perfume, National Fragrance Day really does gives us a focus for our passion. If we write about fragrance its an opportunity for literary exploration, if we sell fragrance it’s a chance to introduce our customers to something new and if we just like to wear fragrance then we should do so with pride. Fragrance is transformative, it can lift our mood, transport us back in time, help seduce or quite simply help us face the world. Whatever you do to celebrate National Fragrance Day make sure you have fun and please, do tell us about it!
