The thing about developing a love affair with fragrance is that once it is in your system, it is there to stay and no matter where you go you won’t be able to stop yourself from seeking it out!
So where have I been and what have I seen? Recent travels have mostly been to Europe with one quick trip to New York and this is what I found….
This was supposedly a trip to catch up with old friends from Australia who were initially bemused and then intrigued by my determination to seek out The Perfumery Tucked away (in the most literal sense) in the back streets of Barcelona’s gothic quarter, this gem of a store is packed to the rafters with exquisite scents. I spent a happy hour chatting to the owner about all things perfumed and trying several brands that were completely new to me. There was no pressure to buy, just a genuine enthusiasm for fragrance, which was a joy to experience.
For me, no trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to the Jovoy Perfumery on the elegant Rue Castiglione. Jovoy is every fragrance lovers dream with over 100 brands to choose from. Every member of staff I spoke to had an encyclopedic knowledge of the fragrances and I thoroughly enjoyed being guided through brands both familiar and new in pursuit of something special for my birthday.
My perfume travels in Milan were complicated by the fact that there seems to be a beautiful perfumery on every corner! I visited as many as I possibly could, taking in stand alone brand stores as well as independents, and after careful consideration I think that my two favourites are Olfattorio on the Via Brera and the famous Corso Como. Corso Como is actually more of a concept store so plenty for your travelling companion to look at if fragrance doesn’t float their boat!
Troon (yes Troon!)
If you thought that Scotland was an unlikely hunting ground for indulging your fragrance passion you’d be wrong! Troon is probably most famous for its golfing heritage but this town about 30 miles from Glasgow is also home to Scentsations a beautiful fragrance emporium which describes itself as a ‘candy shop for grown ups’. Well worth a visit if you find yourself visiting Ayrshire at any time in the near future!
New York is such a feast for the senses on every level so it is no surprise that when it comes to fragrance, it has some pretty special things on offer. For the ultimate fragrance experience head to Greenwich Avenue and the Aedes Perfumery Elegant, opulent, theatrical…..its hard to find words to describe that moment when you enter this most luxurious of boutiques. If you are lucky you might meet one of the co-founders, Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner, whose passion for fragrance permeates every element of what can only be described as a mecca for perfume lovers!
I love the thought that there is a whole world of perfumeries out there to discover. It adds a whole other level to my travels and with more trips planned this year I’ll be sharing my discoveries with you!
