How do you choose your fragrance?
It is generally accepted that in today’s society we are all heavily influenced by branding – from the clothing labels we wear to the foods we eat, branding is something we just can’t escape. Fragrance, it seems, is no exception and when walking through the perfumery hall, the latest blockbuster promotions from the likes of Marc Jacobs or Dior are difficult to ignore.
For some, a brand name like Chanel is a sign of quality. For others the label serves as an expression of their social identify and for many the purchasing of well-known, mass-market brands is quite simply a means of ‘fitting in’.
Before my love affair with fragrance began I was in this majority – subconsciously buying into mass brands because quite frankly I knew no better. However, I soon began to realize many of the smaller, niche brands out there have much to offer in terms of quality, exclusivity but more importantly their distinctive characteristics. After all, for a product which is meant to be so personal and character defining, why would you want to smell like everyone else?
In my opinion there are plenty of niche and smaller fragrance brands in which deserve so much more attention for their wonderful scents. To that end here is a list of my three favourite (not so well known) perfumes:
Maison Martin Maghiela – Replica Flower Market EDT:
This fragrance is slightly different to the usual sweet and fruity fragrances I am drawn too. With floral and rosy notes, this Eau de Toilette is light, refreshing and brimming with the crisp petal freshness of just cut flowers – perfect for the spring months.
Angel Schlesser – Pour Elle:
With fresh and citrusy accords and sparkling floral notes, this is one of my all time favourite perfumes. This juice contains everything I love about a fragrance and plus the bottle is so beautiful and elegant.
Based around Pink Pomelo from Florida, this scent is blended with fruity and floral Mandarin, Blackcurrant Bud, Orange Blossom and Bulgarian Rose – a delicious and zesty scent, which instantly has me dreaming about summer.
